Stellantis has issued a recall of nearly 140,000 Jeep and Ram models equipped with the 3.0-liter, six-cylinder EcoDiesel engine due to a potentially faulty high-pressure fuel pump which could render the vehicles inoperable.
Not many details were given on the exact nature of the problem, aside from Stellantis expecting the issue to arise slowly, over time, rather than as a sudden loss of fuel pressure. Drivers may notice warning signs such as noises emanating from the fuel pump or a check engine light coming on before the problem manifests itself in complete failure.
As stated in the company’s defect report, Jeep Grand Cherokees shipped from 2014-2020 as well as Ram 1500s shipped from 2014-2019 came equipped with a fuel pump that can fail prematurely.
According to the defect report, “A HPFP failure may introduce internally failed component debris into the fuel system potentially causing fuel starvation”. “Fuel starvation may result in an unexpected loss of motive power, which can cause a vehicle to crash without prior warning.”
Customers should begin receiving recall notices in late July or early August. Stellantis says it knows of more than 200 incidents of premature pump failure within the recalled vehicle population. According to Stellantis, no accidents or injuries have been associated with the problem thus far.
