Chevy is set to expand the Corvette catalog again, this time with its most potent variant yet. The Corvette ZR1 will get an official reveal in July, according to the automaker, landing with what will almost certainly be an insanely powerful V8 and wild bodywork.
The ZR1 is expected to get the flat-plane-crank V8 from the Corvette Z06 while adding two turbochargers, which will likely elevate the car’s power output beyond 800 horsepower. Rear-wheel drive and a dual-clutch transmission are also expected. That combination should push the car’s 0-60 mph times below 2.5 seconds.
Chevrolet will likely leave the car’s interior mostly alone, with the ZR1 closely mirroring the Z06, Stingray, and E-Ray. Its exterior bodywork may look similar to the Z06’s super-aggro styling, but it may be even more aggressive, and we’ll likely see a prominent rear wing. Chevy may also offer a performance and appearance upgrade package similar to the Z07 options group offered for the Z06.
We don’t have full pricing details yet, but most estimates peg the starting price at north of $150,000. That said, some Corvettes see list prices that significantly outpace their MSRPs, as dealers are keen to take advantage of the cars’ desirability and rarity.
The Corvette isn’t exactly the bargain supercar alternative it once was, but $150,000 for the level of performance the ZR1 will offer is a pretty solid deal. Chevrolet and GM have managed to bake in enough speed, handling, and electronics to make the eighth-generation ‘Vette a legit competitor on the world stage, and the ZR1 will elevate the car to new levels.
