One thing you really want to work well in a powerful sports car is your seatbelt, but some Corvette owners might find theirs unusable. Chevy is recalling 13,464 of the cars for an issue that could cause the seatbelt to become locked in a stowed position.

The issue is caused by two internal seatbelt retractor components, which might be “slightly out of dimensional specifications.” If those components are present and the seatbelt is fully extended, it could become locked when retracted.

A GM engineer noticed the problem and submitted a report through the automaker’s Speak Up For Safety program. After opening an investigation on April 9, GM’s supplier identified the components, which were in seatbelts sent to the automaker between October last year and May 2024. The decision was made to recall the car on May 30, and GM said it was not aware of any crashes or injuries related to the issue.

Dealers will replace the retractors free of charge, and GM has issued a stop-sale for the cars. It noted that selling vehicles with defective components is illegal but also said that the parts are on backorder and did not give an expected stock date. That could leave some dealers and buyers waiting on cars indefinitely.

The automaker did not say which Corvette models are affected, only specifying model years 2024 and 2025, but it’s relatively safe to assume that all variants use the same retractor components.
