Ford to Offer Near-Unlimited Color Choices for Mustang GTD

by

The Ford Mustang GTD looks to be a legitimate Porsche 911 GT3 competitor, but the American automaker is taking a page out of Porsche’s playbook with its new, six-figure machine. The Blue Oval will offer an “Extended Color Palette” with an almost endless number of color choices for the car, mirroring Porsche’s Paint-to-Sample program.

Ford announced the program at the Goodwood Festival of Speed. The GTD is appearing at the event this week and will be shown in a unique “Indulgent Blue” color as part of the Extended Color Palette. Though it will start at around $300,000, the Mustang GTD is only available in six standard colors, so custom paints will likely make the car far more desirable and valuable for collectors. Buyers can also “lock out” their custom color, preventing anyone else from getting the same hue.

The automaker claims more than 800 horsepower from the car’s supercharged V8 and said it’s targeting a top speed in excess of 190 mph. It gets a load of performance goodies normally limited to motorsport, including a carbon fiber driveshaft, a dry sump oil system, semi-active suspension, and more. Its most recognizable features are its aerodynamic body panels, which expand on the Mustang’s shape with a huge wing, a widened track, and a wild number of vents and scoops.
