A few years back, Hyundai showed the breathtaking N Vision 74 concept, a retro-inspired two-door EV with a tantalizing 80-style look. Speculation about the car’s release has swirled since, but the automaker recently confirmed that the car would land as part of its effort to deliver 21 new EVs by 2030.
Hyundai dropped the news during its Investor Day presentation when talking about upcoming “high-performance EVs.” The automaker didn’t detail specs for the car, so there’s no way to know if it will push forward with the hydrogen fuel cell configuration shown with the concept or if it will move to a standard electric powertrain for the production car. As Motor1 pointed out, the hydrogen fueling situation in the United States is far less than perfect, so a traditional electric configuration is more likely.
That said, Hyundai has hinted that the 74 could be a super limited-production car, which would make hydrogen more reasonable. Reports have also pointed to a massively powerful hydrogen system making 800 horsepower or more from dual motors, while others have speculated a high-700-horsepower number.
The only things we know for sure are that the car is coming and that it will arrive before 2030, so there could be a hefty wait for the 74’s launch. In any case, if the car lands with anywhere near the expected performance, it’ll be well worth the wait. Plus, how can you not be excited about the styling?
